“He had a whole collection of beautiful notebooks himself. He loved stationery. But he hardly ever used it. Like his gran he felt that he’s be spoiling it, even trying to put his ideas onto paper. He’d tried a couple of times, but become too embarrassed and self-conscious in the attempt. By now he knew that he’d never be a writer. ‘We’re readers. That’s what we are,’ he told his gran. ‘And we read enough to know that we can’t do it. To know that writing is hard.’”
